It's not how Big it is, It's how long you go.
As you may or may not have heard, the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) had recently decided to delay the expansion of the A-League until the 2009/10 edition of the league.
And thank all that is holy. Where did the FFA think they could find 46 new players to fill the rosters?
The quality of the A-League at the moment, despite ’Big Pim’ being unimpressed is rather respectable for what it is. But if a further 46 players were sucked out of the ranks I am positive that the quality would quickly deteriorate.
But, that doesn’t mean keep it as it is. 20 rounds is rather pitiful for a national league. Lengthen the season instead of being bullied out by Rugby League and AFL and rushing the season to end before the supposedly bigger codes come through.
The average NRL crowd for 2007 was 15,751. Four A-league clubs beat this average. It’s not like isn’t the current league is struggling, it does need expansion, but new clubs isn’t the answer, Longer seasons however is very viable.
Extend it to 28 rounds. Play each team 4 times. Two home, two away, simple. With the growth of football in this country after the world cup I can’t see how this would fail.
I am fairly confident that attendances would not drop with a slight overlap in the other codes seasons. In fact, it could put pressure on the others with our finals series interfering with the start of their seasons.
There is however one thing the concerns me. I’m agreeing with Frank Farina on this.
