"Wonder Strike"

Manchester United have advanced to the final in Moscow on the 21st of May, as long as their visa’s clear of course.

The description 'wonder strike' is thrown around a lot these days, but really there is no other way to describe Paul Scholes' 14th minute thunderous shot.

The man who has been at the club for almost twenty years, fifteen of them professional, intercepted, or rather merely received a wayward ball from Zambrotta twenty-five metres from goal and had no problem putting a swerving ball past Valdes into the top right corner.

When you just sit back and think how much those 90’s Manchester United Youth sides have given to football, it is rather staggering. Scholes, Giggs, Savage, Butt, the Neville brothers, Beckham, it is quite an amazing list. Sir Alex isn’t the remarkably successful coach he is by sheer luck, he crafted these players for the future and advancement of the game more than just personal gain. He just happened to hold onto the best of the lot.

Interestingly it was a Crisitano run which made Zambrotta to take the ball and release it quickly, forcng him into a terrible decision. Just another of Ronaldo’s many talents. He doesn’t need pass, he makes the opposition pass for him.

Despite this early goal you would have to say United’s attack was absent until that dart from Ronaldo. I cannot recall a time they came close to being in the attacking third at all until the goal. But they don’t need much to make you pay for your mistakes. The calibre of players can make you pay the ultimate price for a slack piece of football.

Mind you. Another club with a high calibre of players has failed to score in 4 games of football. What are we going to do about Barcelona? There is some serious work to be done. No doubt there is potential. Massive amounts. I couldn’t fit the amount of potential they have in the back seat of my car. The question is, why aren’t they performing to that potential?

The only players that have impressed me in the last two games have been Messi and Henry. I am mystified and mortified as to why Eto’o has started both games. Eto’o is well past his game. This is a form slump of epic proportions. On the other hand, in both games Henry has come on and troubled the keeper more in twenty minutes then Eto’o had the rest of the game. It is very disappointing to see one of the best natural finishers of the game sit on the bench when you obviously need to score.

Rijkaard’s reign is drawing to a close, and not a moment too soon in my opinion. This season, this year particularly, has been an atrocity compared to what they are capable of. There have been off the field drama’s that need sorting out, particularly with Ronaldinho, but many other things, and the break can’t come fast enough for Barcelona.

On a side note, if the FCB President happens to read this, I am interested in the Manager position at your club. Just post a comment and we can see how it goes from there.

Bring on Moscow -- and give Scholes a beer.
